Maharashtra Approves 442 Km Kalyan–Latur Expressway, Cutting Travel Time to Four Hours
442
The state government has given the green light for a 442‑kilometre expressway connecting Kalyan and Latur, which is expected to reduce the current journey from over 10 hours to just around four hours.
Mumbai | December 13, 2025:Maharashtra is set to witness a major boost in road infrastructure as the government has approved the 442‑kilometre Kalyan–Latur Expressway. The project, cleared in principle by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, will now move to the detailed planning stage under the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).
Once completed, the expressway will significantly shorten travel time between the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Latur in Marathwada, transforming a 10‑ to 11‑hour journey into approximately four hours. Officials say this will not only benefit daily commuters but also facilitate smoother logistics and trade across the state.

The proposed route starts from Kalyan and passes through Malshej Ghat, Ahmednagar, Beed, Manjarsumba, and Ambajogai before reaching Latur, with potential extensions toward the Maharashtra–Karnataka border. A notable feature of the plan is an 8‑kilometre tunnel through Malshej Ghat, ensuring all-weather passage through the hilly terrain.
Authorities have indicated that the expressway will eventually link with other planned corridors, including the Virar–Alibaug Multi-Modal Corridor, enhancing regional connectivity for both passenger vehicles and freight movement. The preliminary cost estimate for the project is around ₹35,000 crore, with the final budget to be determined after the Detailed Project Report is prepared.

MSRDC officials are expected to complete the DPR within 12 to 18 months. Following approvals and funding arrangements, construction could commence, though land acquisition and planning remain significant challenges.
The government has described the expressway as a strategic initiative to accelerate economic activity, improve transport efficiency, and bring key regions of Maharashtra closer together through faster and safer road connectivity.
