Pune is experiencing an unusually sharp cold spell this December, with night temperatures dipping below 8°C and weather experts forecasting continued chill into mid-December.

Pune, December 13, 2025 – Pune is witnessing an unusually intense cold spell this December, with minimum night temperatures consistently dropping below 8°C, marking one of the coldest early-winter phases the city has experienced in recent years. Several areas across the city and its outskirts have recorded single-digit lows, making nights and early mornings particularly harsh for residents unaccustomed to such sharp winter chill.

Weather experts attribute the sudden dip in temperatures to strong, dry northerly winds moving across Maharashtra, bringing cold air into the region. Clear night skies have further accelerated heat loss from the surface, causing temperatures to fall rapidly after sunset. This combination has resulted in prolonged cold conditions rather than brief temperature dips, which are more typical for Pune during December.

Data from recent days indicates that the city’s minimum temperatures have hovered around or below the 8°C mark on multiple occasions, a level considered significantly lower than the seasonal average. Some pockets, especially in low-lying and open areas, have felt the chill more intensely, with residents reporting frost-like cold during early morning hours.

The cold spell is part of a wider winter pattern affecting several parts of Maharashtra, where inland regions are experiencing sharper temperature drops compared to coastal areas. Meteorologists note that high-pressure systems and low humidity levels are enhancing nighttime cooling, making the cold feel more biting despite relatively comfortable daytime temperatures.

The sudden change has impacted daily routines in Pune, with reduced outdoor activity during late evenings and early mornings. Morning walkers and commuters are increasingly seen bundled in warm clothing, while street activity tends to slow down after sunset. Many residents have remarked that this winter feels colder than usual, especially compared to the past few years.

Health experts have advised caution, particularly for senior citizens, children, and individuals with respiratory conditions. Prolonged exposure to cold air during night and early morning hours can aggravate respiratory issues, trigger joint pain, and increase susceptibility to seasonal infections. Doctors recommend wearing adequate warm clothing, avoiding early morning exposure, and staying hydrated during cold conditions.

Weather forecasts suggest that the cold spell may continue for a few more days, with nights remaining chilly even if daytime temperatures rise slightly. A gradual moderation in minimum temperatures is expected later in the month as wind patterns change, though intermittent cold nights cannot be ruled out as winter progresses.
