The initiative, part of a broader strategy to modernize landfill operations and reduce long-term environmental and financial burdens, is expected to cut waste processing costs by an estimated ₹120 crore over the duration of the contract.

Under the biomining model, old landfill waste will be scientifically excavated and processed to recover recyclable materials while stabilizing the remaining refuse. This reduces the volume of waste in landfills and extends their usable life. The technology also minimizes environmental hazards such as methane emissions and groundwater contamination that typically arise from unmanaged waste dumps.
