The Maharashtra government has constituted state and district-level committees to remove encroachments from historic forts and strengthen protection of the state’s cultural and archaeological heritage.
Mumbai | 03 February, 2026:The Maharashtra government has taken a significant step towards protecting its historical and cultural heritage by constituting state-level and district-level committees to address encroachments on forts across the state. The decision has been formalised through a Government Resolution issued under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

According to the resolution, a state-level committee has been formed under the chairmanship of the Minister for Cultural Affairs, with the Revenue Minister serving as co-chairperson. Ministers from key departments including rural development, tourism, public works, forests and ports development have been included as members. The Director of the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums will function as the member secretary of the committee.

In addition, district-level committees will be constituted in every district under the chairmanship of the respective District Collectors. These committees will be responsible for identifying encroachments on forts, ensuring their removal, and monitoring sites to prevent any recurrence of illegal construction.
The scope of the committees includes framing a comprehensive policy for permanent removal of encroachments, reviewing the work of district-level bodies, and recommending amendments to existing laws if required to ensure stricter action. The government has stated that the objective is to preserve the historical integrity of forts and safeguard Maharashtra’s rich heritage.

The decision has been welcomed by fort conservation groups and heritage organisations, who have expressed hope that the measures will lead to effective on-ground action and long-term protection of historic monuments.
