CBSE Schools in Maharashtra Must Follow Government-Approved Holidays to Ensure Uniform Breaks
Maharashtra
CBSE schools in Maharashtra will now follow government-approved holiday schedules, ensuring uniform summer, Diwali, and Christmas breaks while preventing arbitrary school-specific vacations and protecting academic continuity.
Mumbai | 03 February, 2026: CBSE schools across Maharashtra are now required to strictly adhere to government-approved academic holiday calendars, ending years of uneven vacation practices across districts. The directive applies to all CBSE-affiliated schools, including aided, unaided, minority, and municipal institutions, for the 2026–27 academic year.

Education officials said the move aims to address complaints that some schools were shortening vacations or refusing holidays declared by local administrations, creating disparities among schools operating in the same region. The policy ensures uniformity during major breaks such as summer, Diwali, and Christmas, while safeguarding students’ academic continuity.
For the upcoming academic year, district authorities have finalized 10 days each for Diwali and Christmas holidays, and the approved schedule will now be binding on all CBSE schools within the jurisdiction. Schools retain autonomy over internal planning but cannot override state-declared holidays.

The decision follows sustained advocacy by the CBSE School Staff Welfare Association (SISWA), which highlighted that some school managements ignored state-approved calendars, denying legitimate breaks to teachers and non-teaching staff. After reviewing complaints, district education officers conducted meetings with stakeholders and ruled that government-approved holidays must be followed.
Officials also noted that school authorities will now be required to submit affidavits certifying compliance with the approved holiday calendar. This step is expected to curb arbitrary holiday practices and ensure accountability.
State education officials emphasized that the new system will promote fairness across schools, prevent administrative confusion, and standardize student and staff holidays statewide. The move is being seen as a significant step toward improving academic planning and strengthening the regulatory framework for CBSE-affiliated schools in Maharashtra.
