Pune Metro’s upcoming Line 3 will be operated entirely by women train pilots, with 100 recruits trained to lead the women‑led urban mobility milestone.

Pune | 12 February, 2026- Pune is set to make history as Metro Line 3, connecting Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar, will be operated exclusively by women train pilots. Around 100 women have been recruited and are undergoing extensive training to ensure operational readiness, safety, and efficient service when the line becomes fully functional.

The upcoming Line 3 corridor, spanning approximately 23 km with 23 stations, aims to significantly reduce travel time between Pune’s IT hub and central business districts. Officials expect the line to be operational by March 2026, pending final testing and safety clearances. Most recruits are residents of Pune and nearby districts, though some have joined from other cities. About 60% are fresh graduates, many with engineering backgrounds, while the remainder bring prior experience in metro driving or transport operations. Their training programme is rigorous, combining written assessments, aptitude tests, psychometric evaluations, and practical driving exercises under supervision.

Authorities have also implemented safety and support measures, including secure commuting arrangements and workplace protocols, to ensure the well-being of the women train pilots. Officials emphasise that this initiative is not just a transport milestone but a step toward social empowerment, inspiring more women to pursue careers in sectors traditionally dominated by men.

Transport experts and civic officials have praised the initiative as a model for inclusivity, highlighting that women-led operations can enhance both safety and service quality. Residents and commuters are optimistic that Line 3 will set a benchmark for urban transport in India, demonstrating how gender diversity can be successfully integrated into large-scale infrastructure projects.

In conclusion, Pune Metro Line 3 represents a landmark achievement in urban mobility, combining technological efficiency with progressive social policy. The all-women train pilot initiative signals a significant step toward gender equality in India’s public transport sector, offering inspiration for other cities to follow suit.
