Maharashtra government approves historic expansion of Pune Municipal Corporation, officially including 23 villages. Development authority unified under PMC to improve infrastructure, urban planning, and citizen services, boosting sustainable city growth
Pune|Maharashtra |February 13, 2026:The Maharashtra government has officially approved the expansion of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), incorporating 23 surrounding villages into the city limits, marking a historic step in Pune’s urban development. The decision was taken under the leadership of Deputy Chief Minister and Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde and is considered a significant milestone in the city’s growth trajectory.

According to the Urban Development Department’s notification, the existing special planning authority systems for the newly included villages have been abolished. Going forward, PMC will serve as the sole planning authority, streamlining approvals for development plans, building permits, infrastructure projects, and civic services. This centralization is expected to enhance transparency, speed, and accountability in urban governance.

The expansion will provide integrated water supply, sewage systems, road networks, waste management, healthcare, and educational facilities to the newly added areas. Authorities said the move will promote planned urbanization, curb unauthorized construction, and create an environment conducive to investment and sustainable growth.

Government officials highlighted that the decision reflects the development-oriented policies of the Mahayuti administration and addresses the aspirations of Pune residents for better civic amenities and inclusive urban planning. Experts note that this expansion could also support long-term infrastructure planning and improve overall quality of life for Pune’s growing population.
