A segment of an under-construction metro pillar collapses onto passing vehicles in Mulund West, Mumbai, killing one person and injuring four others.
Pune | 14 February, 2026- A tragic infrastructure accident occurred in Mumbai when a section of an under-construction metro pillar collapsed onto moving vehicles in Mulund West, resulting in one death and four injuries. The incident took place around midday on the busy Lal Bahadur Shastri Road, a key arterial route connecting eastern suburbs, causing chaos and severe traffic disruption.
According to preliminary information, a heavy concrete segment forming part of a metro support structure suddenly gave way and crashed onto a passing auto-rickshaw and a private car. The impact severely damaged both vehicles, trapping occupants under debris. Eyewitnesses described hearing a loud crash followed by dust clouds and panic as commuters rushed to safety.
Emergency response teams, including police, fire brigade personnel, and ambulance services, arrived quickly at the scene. Rescue workers worked to clear concrete debris and free the injured passengers. One individual was declared dead at the site, while four others sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities have not yet released full details regarding the victims’ identities.
The collapsed structure is believed to be part of the ongoing expansion of Mumbai Metro, specifically linked to the development of Metro Line 4, which aims to improve connectivity between eastern suburbs and central business districts. Construction work has been underway along several stretches of the corridor, with heavy machinery and elevated pillars visible along LBS Road.
Following the collapse, traffic on LBS Road was temporarily halted in both directions as authorities secured the area and assessed structural safety. Commuters experienced long delays, and alternate routes were advised until debris was cleared and stability checks were completed. Engineers and civic officials cordoned off the accident site to prevent further risk.

The incident has raised serious concerns about construction safety standards and monitoring procedures at large infrastructure sites. Investigators are examining whether the collapse was caused by structural weakness, faulty materials, improper curing of concrete, or inadequate reinforcement. Authorities are also reviewing whether safety barricades and protective measures were sufficient to shield passing traffic from potential hazards.
Urban infrastructure experts note that while metro expansion projects are critical for easing congestion and modernizing city transport, strict compliance with engineering standards and public safety guidelines is essential. With multiple large-scale projects underway across Mumbai, this accident underscores the risks posed by active construction in densely populated urban corridors.
Officials have assured the public that a detailed technical inquiry will determine accountability and recommend corrective measures. Safety audits of similar under-construction pillars may also be conducted to prevent further incidents. Meanwhile, local residents and daily commuters have expressed concern over construction practices and called for tighter oversight to ensure public safety.
