A 29-year-old labourer was killed in Moshi, Pune after a dispute over cooking dinner at a construction site turned violent. Police have arrested the accused.
Pune | 12 March, 2026: A heated argument between two construction workers over cooking dinner turned deadly in Pune’s Moshi area, where a labourer was allegedly killed with an LPG cylinder at a construction site. The incident occurred late at night at a labour camp located in Kudale Vasti, creating panic among workers staying at the site and prompting immediate police action.

The deceased has been identified as Balaji Maroti Khandade (29), a native of Nanded district who had come to Pune for work in the construction sector. The accused, Pradeep Vitthal Gundare (31), originally from Latur district and currently residing in Moshi, has been arrested in connection with the case. Police said both men were distant relatives and were employed as labourers at the same construction project while living in temporary accommodation at the worksite.
According to preliminary information from the investigation, the incident took place late Monday night when the two workers got into an argument related to preparing food at the labour camp. The disagreement quickly escalated from a verbal dispute into a violent confrontation between the two men.
During the altercation, the accused allegedly picked up an LPG cylinder kept at the site and struck Khandade on the head. The impact caused severe head injuries to the victim. Other workers present at the site rushed to the scene and immediately arranged to take the injured man to a nearby hospital for treatment.
However, despite medical efforts, Khandade succumbed to his injuries shortly after being admitted. His sudden death shocked fellow workers and residents of the labour camp, many of whom had been staying together at the construction site for work.
Following the incident, the accused reportedly fled from the spot. Police soon launched a search operation and managed to trace and arrest him. A case of murder has been registered against the accused under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and further investigation is underway.

Police officials said both the accused and the victim had migrated to the Pune region in search of employment. Like many construction workers in the rapidly expanding urban areas around Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune, they were living in temporary labour camps near the worksite.
Authorities are currently questioning other workers present at the camp to reconstruct the sequence of events and determine whether any additional factors contributed to the violent clash. Investigators are also examining whether alcohol consumption played a role in triggering the argument.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the challenging living conditions faced by migrant labourers working at construction sites. Workers often share limited living and cooking spaces in labour camps, which can sometimes lead to disputes among residents.
