After caring for their comatose son for 13 years and exhausting their life savings on treatment, a Ghaziabad couple received Supreme Court approval for euthanasia in a deeply emotional case
New Delhi | March 13, 2026: In a deeply moving case highlighting parental sacrifice and the complexities of end-of-life decisions, the Supreme Court of India has granted permission for euthanasia to 32-year-old Harish Rana, who has remained in a coma for over a decade following a tragic accident.

Harish, a resident of Ghaziabad, suffered severe brain injuries in 2013 after falling from the fourth floor of a building while pursuing his B.Tech degree in Chandigarh. The accident left him in a prolonged comatose state, with doctors stating that the chances of meaningful recovery were extremely unlikely.
For the past 13 years, his parents, Ashok Rana and Nirmala Rana, devoted their lives to caring for their son. Determined to keep him alive and hopeful for a miracle, the couple spent their entire life savings on his medical treatment and long-term care.

As the financial burden mounted, the family was forced to sell their home in Delhi to continue treatment at major hospitals, including the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Despite their relentless efforts and years of medical care, Harish’s condition showed no signs of improvement.
Eventually, faced with the emotional and financial strain, the parents approached the Supreme Court seeking permission for euthanasia, describing it as the most painful decision of their lives but one taken to end their son’s prolonged suffering.
Today, Ashok Rana, who previously worked for a hospitality company, survives on a modest monthly pension of ₹3,600. To support the household, he sells sandwiches outside a nearby cricket ground each morning. The story of the Rana family has moved many across the country, reflecting the profound love, sacrifice and resilience of parents who spent years fighting for their son’s life before ultimately seeking a dignified end to his suffering.
