Meta to Remove End-to-End Encryption from Instagram Direct Messages Starting May 8
Meta has announced that Instagram will remove end-to-end encryption from its direct messaging feature from May 8, raising fresh concerns about user privacy and access to personal conversations on the platform.
March 14, 2026 | Pune Meta Platforms has announced a significant change to Instagram’s messaging system, confirming that the platform will remove the end-to-end encryption (E2EE) feature from its direct messages starting May 8. The move is expected to affect how private conversations are protected on one of the world’s most widely used social media platforms. End-to-end encryption ensures that messages can only be read by the sender and the recipient, preventing any third party including the platform itself from accessing the conversation. The feature was introduced to Instagram direct messages in December 2023 as part of Meta’s broader effort to strengthen privacy tools across its messaging services.

Meta had previously rolled out the encryption feature for Instagram and Facebook Messenger in a manner similar to WhatsApp, where private chats remain inaccessible even to the company. However, with the latest update, Instagram’s direct message conversations will no longer be fully protected under the same encryption standard. According to information shared by Meta through its official blog update, the change is part of adjustments to the platform’s messaging framework. ‘

The decision has sparked discussions among users and digital privacy advocates, who believe the removal of encryption could raise concerns regarding data access and online privacy. Instagram remains one of Meta’s key platforms with hundreds of millions of users globally who rely on direct messaging for personal communication, networking, and business interactions. Experts say the development could influence how users perceive privacy protections on social media platforms and may prompt renewed debate about data security standards in the digital ecosystem.
