Baner Residents Approach Police Over Footpath Encroachment and Double Parking Near Restaurant

Residents of Baner in Pune file a police complaint over footpath encroachment and double parking near a restaurant, raising concerns about pedestrian safety.

Pune | 16 March, 2026: Residents of Baner have approached the Baner Police Station raising concerns about footpath encroachment and double parking near a restaurant along Baner Road. The issue has sparked discussion among citizens about pedestrian safety and the increasing problem of illegal parking in busy residential and commercial areas of Pune.

According to residents, vehicles belonging to customers visiting the restaurant were allegedly being parked on the footpath as well as along the roadside in two rows. The situation reportedly forced pedestrians to walk on the main road to pass through the stretch, which increased the risk of accidents, especially during evening hours when traffic movement is heavy.

The issue gained attention after a local resident questioned the practice and began documenting vehicles parked on the footpath. However, when the individual raised the concern with people present at the location, he allegedly faced rude behaviour and intimidation. The incident prompted other residents and local community members to support the complainant and escalate the matter with authorities.

Following this, a group of citizens along with representatives from Baner-Pashan Residents Association and Baner-Balewadi Nagarik Manch approached the police station and submitted a formal complaint. The residents demanded strict action against the encroachment and requested authorities to ensure that footpaths remain accessible for pedestrians.

Police officials acknowledged receiving the complaint and said the matter will be examined. Authorities indicated that appropriate action would be taken if violations of parking regulations or public space encroachment are confirmed. Officials also encouraged residents to report similar problems so that enforcement agencies can take timely action.

Local residents say that the problem reflects a broader challenge faced in rapidly developing neighbourhoods such as Baner. With the growth of restaurants, cafés, and commercial establishments in the area, parking demand has increased significantly. In many cases, vehicles end up occupying public footpaths that are meant exclusively for pedestrian use.

Pedestrians, particularly senior citizens and children, are often the most affected when sidewalks are blocked. When footpaths are unavailable due to illegal parking or encroachment, people are forced to walk along busy roads, increasing the chances of accidents. Citizens therefore believe that stricter enforcement of parking rules and better traffic management are essential to ensure public safety.

Urban civic experts also note that footpaths are a critical component of city infrastructure and must remain accessible to pedestrians at all times. Maintaining clear walkways not only improves pedestrian safety but also encourages walking as a sustainable mode of urban mobility.
