Pune civic body has decided to include two major government health insurance schemes to expand affordable medical coverage for citizens and strengthen access to treatment in empanelled hospitals.

Pune | March 16, 2026: In a significant move aimed at improving access to affordable healthcare, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to integrate two major government-backed health insurance schemes into its healthcare framework. The decision was taken during a recent meeting of the civic body, where officials discussed ways to expand medical coverage and make treatment more accessible for residents.

As part of the decision, the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana and the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana will be incorporated into the municipal healthcare system. Authorities believe the move will help a larger section of the population access subsidised or cashless treatment in empanelled hospitals.

Officials said the inclusion of both schemes will strengthen the healthcare support structure for economically weaker sections and middle-income families who often struggle with rising medical expenses. By linking municipal hospitals and associated healthcare facilities with these schemes, patients will be able to receive treatment for various medical conditions without bearing the full financial burden.

The Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana, implemented by the Maharashtra government, provides financial protection for several critical medical procedures and hospital treatments for eligible beneficiaries. Similarly, the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, launched by the central government, is one of the largest public health insurance programmes in the world and offers coverage for a wide range of hospitalisation services.

Civic officials noted that integrating these schemes within PMC-run healthcare facilities is expected to streamline patient access to benefits and ensure that eligible citizens are able to take advantage of government-funded medical support. The decision is also expected to reduce out-of-pocket healthcare expenditure for many families in the city.

During the meeting, officials highlighted that better coordination between municipal hospitals and the insurance schemes will help patients receive timely treatment and reduce delays in approvals and reimbursements. The move is also expected to increase awareness among citizens about available health coverage options.

Healthcare experts say that linking municipal healthcare systems with large-scale government insurance programmes can significantly improve public health outcomes. With the rising cost of medical treatments, such initiatives play an important role in making quality healthcare more affordable and accessible.

The civic administration believes that the integration will allow more residents to benefit from advanced medical treatments in both public and private hospitals that are part of the schemes’ network. Authorities also expect that the decision will strengthen the city’s public health infrastructure while ensuring wider healthcare coverage.

With the adoption of these schemes, the Pune Municipal Corporation aims to create a more inclusive healthcare system that ensures citizens receive necessary medical treatment without facing severe financial strain.
