Pune administration mandates LPG delivery within 96 hours via OTP-based system, bans direct sales from agencies, and warns of strict action against violations to ensure transparent and smooth distribution.
March 17, 2026 | Pune: In a major move to streamline LPG distribution and prevent irregularities, the Pune district administration has made it mandatory for domestic gas cylinders to be delivered to consumers’ homes within 96 hours of booking. District Collector Jitendra Dudi announced that direct sale of cylinders from gas agencies, warehouses, or any distribution points has been strictly prohibited. Under the new guidelines, LPG distribution will now be carried out exclusively through an OTP-based verification system to ensure transparency and accountability. Agencies have been instructed not to allow queues or on-the-spot distribution outside their premises. Clear signage highlighting these rules must be displayed at all agency offices and godowns.
Pune district currently has over 3.8 million LPG connections, serviced through 222 agencies operated by major oil companies. On March 15 alone, more than 85,000 cylinders were distributed, indicating a surge in demand amid fears of shortage. Officials noted that demand has nearly tripled due to panic among consumers. However, authorities have assured that supply remains adequate and the situation is expected to stabilise within a week. Gas companies have also been directed to increase daily refilling capacity and provide regular updates on supply and demand to the administration.
Strict monitoring has been ordered to prevent illegal practices, and any obstruction in the distribution process will invite stringent action. Police have also been asked to assist in crowd control if required. The administration emphasised that adherence to government guidelines is essential to ensure fair and uninterrupted supply of LPG for both domestic and commercial consumers.
