Three killed after a truck overturned onto an Innova in a multi-vehicle crash near Khopoli on Mumbai-Pune Expressway.

Pune | 18 March, 2026: A tragic road accident on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway claimed three lives after a container truck lost control and overturned onto an Innova car near Khopoli, triggering a major multi-vehicle collision on Wednesday morning. The incident has once again raised serious concerns about safety on one of India’s busiest highways.

According to initial reports, the accident occurred around 9:40 AM on the Mumbai-bound lane near a tunnel close to Khopoli. A speeding container truck reportedly lost control, rammed into multiple vehicles, and eventually toppled onto an Innova car, crushing it completely. All three occupants inside the Innova died on the spot due to the impact.

The crash involved at least four to five vehicles, creating a severe pile-up on the expressway. Several other commuters sustained injuries and were immediately rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Emergency response teams, including highway police, IRB patrol units, and rescue services, quickly reached the spot and launched relief operations.

Authorities used cranes to remove the overturned truck and damaged vehicles, while efforts were made to clear the road and restore traffic movement. However, the accident led to massive congestion on the Mumbai-bound stretch, with long queues of vehicles reported for several kilometers.

Police officials stated that the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, but preliminary findings suggest that the truck may have lost control before colliding with other vehicles. Mechanical failure, overspeeding, or driver error are among the possible factors being examined.

This latest accident adds to a growing list of incidents on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, particularly in the ghat and tunnel sections near Khopoli and Lonavala, which are known for sharp turns, steep gradients, and heavy traffic movement. Safety experts have repeatedly highlighted the need for stricter monitoring of heavy vehicles, better speed regulation, and improved emergency response systems on this critical corridor.

The expressway, which connects Mumbai and Pune, handles thousands of vehicles daily and is considered one of the busiest and most important highways in India. Despite ongoing safety upgrades, accidents involving heavy vehicles continue to pose significant risks to commuters.
