In a major relief for students, the government has announced automatic renewal of scholarships after the first year, eliminating the need for annual reapplication.

Mumbai | March 19 2026: In a significant decision aimed at easing the burden on students, the state government has announced that scholarships will now be automatically renewed after the first year, removing the need for students to apply every year.

The announcement was made by Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat, who stated that the move is intended to simplify the process and ensure timely disbursement of financial assistance to eligible students.

Under the revised system, students will be required to apply for scholarships only in the first year. Once approved, the scholarship will be renewed automatically in subsequent years, subject to eligibility criteria such as academic performance and continuation of studies.

Officials said the decision is expected to benefit a large number of students, particularly those from economically weaker and disadvantaged backgrounds, who rely on government scholarships to pursue their education. The move will also reduce administrative workload and streamline the overall scholarship distribution system.

Previously, students had to submit fresh applications every year, which often led to delays, documentation issues and, in some cases, discontinuation of benefits due to procedural lapses. The new system aims to eliminate such hurdles and ensure continuity in financial support.

The minister emphasised that the government is focused on making education more accessible and student-friendly by leveraging technology and simplifying procedures. Automatic renewal is expected to minimise paperwork and improve efficiency in the system.

Authorities also indicated that necessary digital infrastructure will be strengthened to track student eligibility and academic progress, ensuring that only deserving candidates continue to receive benefits.

Education experts have welcomed the move, stating that it will reduce stress on students and allow them to focus more on their studies rather than administrative formalities.

With this reform, the government aims to make the scholarship process more transparent, efficient and accessible, ultimately supporting students in completing their education without financial interruptions.
