Weather rain and thunderstorms are expected across Maharashtra on March 19, with the IMD issuing an orange alert in seven districts and a yellow alert in 24 others.

Mumbai | March 19, 2026: Ahead of Gudi Padwa celebrations, the India Meteorological Department has issued a statewide weather alert predicting thunderstorms, gusty winds and rainfall across several parts of Maharashtra on March 19.

According to officials, an orange alert has been issued for seven districts, indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall and severe weather conditions. These areas are expected to witness intense thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds, potentially causing disruptions to normal life and festive activities.

In addition, a yellow alert has been declared in 24 districts, including major cities like Pune and Mumbai. The advisory warns of moderate rainfall accompanied by lightning and wind speeds that could affect outdoor events and travel plans.

Meteorologists have attributed the sudden weather change to unstable atmospheric conditions and the influence of western disturbances affecting parts of the country. These systems are leading to cloud formation and unseasonal rainfall even as temperatures begin to rise ahead of summer.

Officials have cautioned that wind speeds may reach 40–60 kmph in some regions, increasing the risk of falling branches, temporary structures being damaged and disruptions in local transport. Citizens have been advised to avoid open areas during thunderstorms and remain indoors during lightning activity.

The weather alert comes at a time when preparations for Gudi Padwa, the Marathi New Year festival, are in full swing. Authorities have urged organisers and citizens to take necessary precautions while planning outdoor celebrations.

Farmers have also been advised to safeguard standing crops, as sudden rain and possible hailstorms may lead to agricultural losses, particularly in regions with ongoing harvest activities.

While the rainfall may bring temporary relief from rising temperatures, officials have warned that weather conditions could remain unstable over the next couple of days.

Authorities have appealed to residents to stay updated with official forecasts and follow safety advisories to avoid any untoward incidents during the festive period.
