On the 99th anniversary of the historic Chavdar Tale Satyagraha, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted its role in establishing the principles of social equality and justice.

Mahad | March 21, 2026: Marking the 99th anniversary of the historic Chavdar Tale Satyagraha, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday said the आंदोलन had laid the foundation for social equality and justice in India.

Speaking at a commemorative event held in Mahad, Fadnavis paid tribute to Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, who led the historic movement in 1927 to assert the right of untouchables to access public water sources. He described the satyagraha as a turning point in India’s social reform movement and a milestone in the fight against caste-based discrimination.

“The Chavdar Tale Satyagraha was not just about water access, but about human dignity and equal rights. It marked the beginning of a new era of social justice,” the Chief Minister said during his address.

The event witnessed participation from public representatives, social activists and citizens, who gathered to honour the legacy of Dr. Ambedkar and the significance of the movement. Floral tributes were offered, and various cultural and educational programmes were organised to mark the occasion.

Fadnavis emphasised that the ideals of equality and inclusion championed by Dr. Ambedkar remain relevant even today. He said the state government is committed to carrying forward these values through policies aimed at social welfare and empowerment of marginalised communities.

The Chavdar Tale Satyagraha is regarded as one of the earliest organised movements against untouchability in India. It asserted the fundamental right of every citizen to access public resources, challenging deeply entrenched social hierarchies of the time.

Officials noted that the upcoming centenary year of the movement will be marked with special programmes across the state to spread awareness about its historical importance and enduring message.

The commemoration also served as a reminder of the progress made in social justice, while underlining the need for continued efforts to ensure equality and dignity for all sections of society.
