Following recent incidents, ANiS has launched a helpline to gather information on fraudulent godmen across Maharashtra, aiming to assist police with verified data and strengthen action against exploitation

Pune | 24 March, 2026: In the wake of growing concerns over fraudulent godmen and their alleged exploitation of citizens, the Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti (ANiS) has initiated a statewide effort to identify such individuals and support police action. The organization has launched a dedicated helpline to collect information from citizens about suspected cases in their local areas.

The move follows a recent case in Nashik that brought renewed attention to the issue of self-styled godmen. Representatives from ANiS, including members of its state executive committee, have submitted a memorandum to the Director General of Police, outlining their plan to compile and share a verified list of such individuals with law enforcement agencies.

According to ANiS members, citizens and victims frequently approach the organization with complaints of exploitation. The collected information, along with available evidence, will be verified by activists and submitted to district police authorities for further action. The organization has also emphasized the need to activate anti-superstition cells at police stations, as mandated by government policy. Regular meetings and proactive functioning of these units, they said, could help identify and curb such illegal practices at an early stage.

Citizens have been urged to report instances of fraudulent activities through the helpline numbers provided by ANiS. Separate contact numbers have also been issued for cases involving the exploitation of women. Officials stated that all complaints received will be thoroughly examined before being forwarded to the police.

ANiS has further called for stricter monitoring of superstition-related content on social media platforms, highlighting the need for coordinated efforts to prevent the spread of misinformation and protect vulnerable individuals.
