No Refund if Ticket Cancelled 8 Hours Before Departure, Railways Revise Key Rules

Passengers cancelling tickets within eight hours of departure will not receive refunds, while boarding stations can now be changed up to 30 minutes before the train leaves.

In a significant move aimed at streamlining passenger operations, Indian Railways has revised its ticket cancellation and boarding rules, introducing stricter refund conditions while offering limited flexibility in boarding options.

Under the newly updated policy, passengers who cancel their tickets within eight hours of the train’s scheduled departure will no longer be eligible for any refund. This marks a notable shift from the earlier system, where partial refunds were allowed depending on the timing of cancellation. Officials say the move is intended to reduce last-minute cancellations and ensure better seat utilization.

At the same time, the Railways has introduced a passenger-friendly provision allowing travelers to change their boarding station up to 30 minutes before departure. Earlier, such changes had to be made several hours in advance, often causing inconvenience to passengers dealing with sudden changes in travel plans.

According to railway authorities, the updated rules are part of broader efforts to modernize services and improve efficiency. The no-refund clause is expected to discourage speculative bookings and help allocate seats more effectively to waitlisted passengers.

Passengers, however, have expressed mixed reactions. While some welcome the flexibility in boarding station changes, others feel the strict refund policy could be harsh, especially in cases of emergencies or unavoidable delays.

Travel experts suggest that passengers should now plan their journeys more carefully, keeping the revised timelines in mind. The eight-hour no-refund window, in particular, is being seen as a critical change that could impact last-minute travel decisions.

Officials also clarified that all other existing rules regarding ticket cancellations, waiting list confirmations, and refunds for earlier cancellations will continue as per the standard guidelines. The changes primarily focus on tightening the final hours before departure while improving operational efficiency.

The revised rules come at a time when Indian Railways is witnessing increasing passenger volumes and is under pressure to optimize seat occupancy across routes. By reducing last-minute cancellations and enabling quicker adjustments in boarding points, the Railways aims to strike a balance between passenger convenience and system efficiency.

Passengers are advised to stay updated with the latest rules and make necessary changes to their travel plans well in advance to avoid inconvenience.
