South Africa sealed a memorable T20I series triumph on New Zealand soil after defeating the hosts by 33 runs in the fifth and final match at Hagley Oval. Conor Esterhuizen starred with a blistering 75 off 33 balls and was named both Player of the Match and Player of the Series.

Christchurch | 26 March 2026: South Africa registered a commanding 33-run victory over New Zealand in the fifth and final T20 International at Hagley Oval on Wednesday, clinching the five-match series 3-2 and scripting a significant overseas achievement on Kiwi soil.

In a high-pressure decider, South Africa delivered a clinical performance with both bat and ball, overcoming early cautiousness to post a challenging total before restricting New Zealand to 154 for 8 in the chase.

Batting first, South Africa began steadily, with Rubin Hermann and Wiaan Mulder laying a stable foundation. Hermann played a composed knock of 39, while Mulder contributed 31, ensuring the visitors stayed on course despite a measured start in the powerplay overs.

The momentum of the innings, however, was dramatically shifted by a sensational counterattack from young batter Conor Esterhuizen. The 24-year-old unleashed a breathtaking assault on the New Zealand bowling attack, smashing 75 runs off just 33 deliveries. His explosive innings included five boundaries and six towering sixes, thrilling the crowd and pushing South Africa to a dominant total.

Esterhuizen’s late-innings acceleration proved decisive as South Africa finished with 187 for 4 in their 20 overs, setting the hosts a target of 188.

New Zealand’s chase never gained full momentum. The hosts suffered an early collapse, losing key wickets at regular intervals and struggling to keep up with the required run rate. Dan Cleaver and Tim Robinson attempted to stabilise the innings, but South Africa’s disciplined bowling attack consistently applied pressure.

Bevan Jacobs provided a brief spark with a quick 36 off 19 balls, while his partnership of 52 runs with all-rounder James Neesham revived hopes of a turnaround. However, the rising asking rate and steady fall of wickets proved too much for the home side.

South Africa’s bowlers struck at crucial moments, ensuring New Zealand never built a sustained recovery. Despite Neesham’s contribution of 24 and Robinson’s 25, the chase faltered, with New Zealand eventually finishing at 154 for 8 in 20 overs.

Among the standout bowlers for South Africa were Coetzee, Bartman and Mulder, each picking up two wickets to seal the series-clinching win.

Esterhuizen’s outstanding performance throughout the series earned him both Player of the Match and Player of the Series honours. Across four matches, he scored 125 runs at an average of 41.67, emerging as South Africa’s most impactful batter in the contest.

The series victory marks a major boost for South Africa’s T20 setup, as winning a tightly contested five-match series in New Zealand is considered a rare and valuable achievement in international cricket.
