A 23-year-old woman is killed in a domestic violence incident in Pune’s Bibvewadi; husband

Pune | 27 March, 2026: In a deeply disturbing case of domestic violence, a 23-year-old woman was murdered in Pune’s Bibvewadi area after her husband allegedly assaulted her due to suspicions about her character, police said on Thursday. The fatal attack occurred at the couple’s residence in Upper Indiranagar on March 24, 2026, and sent shockwaves through the local community, with neighbours and friends expressing outrage over yet another instance of fatal marital violence in the city.

According to the complaint lodged by the victim’s 50-year-old mother, the accused, identified as 29-year-old Shubham Shrikant Ghodke, frequently distrusted his wife, 23-year-old Sarika Shubham Ghodke, over unfounded suspicions regarding her fidelity and alleged impropriety. Over time, the relationship became strained, with family members noting repeated arguments and increasing instances of both physical and emotional abuse in their household. On the afternoon of March 24, the situation spiral-led tragically when Shubham allegedly attacked Sarika with a sharp weapon, inflicting serious injuries to her head, upper body and limbs inside their home, the complaint stated.

Neighbours said they were horrified by the violence when they heard screams, and some rushed to help before calling police and emergency medical services. Sarika was hastily taken to a local hospital, but despite doctors’ efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries the following morning while under treatment. The Bibvewadi police have since registered charges against Shubham under Sections 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), with investigators emphasising that domestic violence and mistrust should never escalate to such extremes.

The couple had two young children, a boy and a girl, who were reportedly present in the home when the attack occurred. Their grandmother, who filed the official FIR, described her daughter as “kind and caring,” saying that ongoing conflict had deeply affected the family. “He always doubted her, even without reason,” she said during questioning, adding that the suspicion had intensified in recent months. Police confirmed that the accused was arrested at the scene and is currently in custody while forensic and witness evidence is being gathered.

Law enforcement officials noted that the tragic incident underscores a broader problem of domestic distrust and violence in families, especially when compounded by toxic perceptions of “character” and marital fidelity without proof. “This is a deeply tragic instance of domestic conflict spiralling into murder,” a senior Bibvewadi police officer said. “We hope this case reminds the public of the importance of communication, conflict resolution, and seeking help before disputes escalate.” Police have also urged anyone experiencing domestic abuse to reach out for legal and social support, reinforcing that there are mechanisms in place to protect victims before situations turn fatal.

Domestic violence cases have long been a concern nationwide, with many incidents going unreported until extreme harm occurs. Advocacy groups in Pune and across Maharashtra have been increasing awareness campaigns on hotlines, legal protections and shelters to encourage victims to speak up at early stages of abuse. “It’s heartbreaking that this family endured so much suffering before intervention came too late,” said one women’s rights activist, noting the need for stronger community support and early action by authorities to prevent such tragedies.

This Bibvewadi murder case has drawn attention to the urgency of addressing underlying issues of marital trust, domestic safety and violence prevention in urban and suburban communities alike. As the investigation continues and legal proceedings progress, families and social organisations are calling for renewed focus on domestic violence education, legal enforcement and support systems to ensure that similar incidents are averted in the future.
