Chinese AI Startup DeepSeek Suffers Record Seven-Hour Global Outage, Breaking Near-Perfect Uptime

China’s AI chatbot DeepSeek experienced its longest outage since launch, going offline for over seven hours and disrupting users worldwide, even as the firm had maintained an almost flawless operational record.

30 March | China : DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence company known for its chatbot powered by its DeepSeek-R1 model, suffered a massive global service outage that lasted more than seven hours, marking the longest downtime in its history. The startup, which has touted a near-99% uptime record since unveiling its technology in 2025, has not yet disclosed the exact cause of the extended disruption. According to user reports tracked by Downdetector, initial faults with DeepSeek’s platform began Sunday evening, with the company’s status page acknowledging the issue at around 9:35 p.m. The outage persisted well into the following morning, with the service only fully restored around 10:33 a.m. on Monday after multiple performance issues were addressed.

The outage struck at a time when anticipation was building around a potential new update from DeepSeek, amplifying concerns among its growing global user base. The disruption affected access to the chatbot across regions, limiting user interaction with the AI assistant that competes with major models from OpenAI, Google, and other industry leaders.

DeepSeek has gained significant attention since the launch of its R1 model in January 2025, which quickly rose to prominence for its competitive performance and lower cost compared with many established AI systems. Despite strong growth and a previously robust operational track record, this latest outage underscores the challenges facing rapidly scaling AI platforms.

The company has not detailed the root causes of the outage, leaving industry observers and users speculating about technical issues behind the prolonged downtime.
