Mira Road Bribery Allegations: Senior Traffic Police Officials Booked After Complaint

A senior police inspector and an assistant inspector from the Kashimira traffic unit have been booked following allegations of demanding monthly bribes from a woman constable, raising concerns over internal accountability.

Mumbai | April 1, 2026: In a development that has raised serious questions over internal discipline within the traffic police department, a senior police inspector and an assistant police inspector from the Kashimira traffic division in Mira Road have been booked for allegedly demanding a fixed monthly bribe from a woman traffic constable.

The case was registered at Kashimira police station after the complainant submitted evidence-backed allegations to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). According to officials, the accused include Senior Police Inspector Sagar Ingole and his assistant, who were allegedly seeking a monthly payment from the constable in exchange for operational leniency.

The Kashimira traffic unit was established under the Mira-Bhayander Police Commissionerate to streamline traffic management in the rapidly growing urban cluster. Over 100 traffic personnel, including both men and women, are currently deployed across key junctions to enforce traffic rules and penalise violations, contributing to government revenue through fines.

However, the latest allegations suggest a parallel, informal system operating within the department. Complaints of on-the-spot cash settlements to avoid official fines have surfaced intermittently in the past, but this case marks a significant escalation, involving senior-ranking officials and internal coercion.

According to the complaint, the woman constable was allegedly asked to pay a fixed monthly amount. She refused to comply and instead approached the ACB with documented proof of the demand. Following this, an inquiry was initiated through the police commissionerate, and Assistant Commissioner of Police Dayanand Sawant was appointed to conduct a preliminary investigation.

During the course of the inquiry, initial findings reportedly indicated that the demand for money had indeed been made. Based on this, ACP Sawant prepared a report and submitted it to the Kashimira police station, leading to the formal registration of a criminal case against the accused officers, confirmed by Senior Police Inspector Rajendra Kamble.

The complainant has also alleged in her statement that the practice of collecting monthly payments was not isolated and that several other personnel may have been involved in regularly paying such amounts to senior officials. She claimed that the system had been in place for some time and that her refusal to participate triggered the conflict.

The case has once again brought attention to the issue of corruption within enforcement agencies, particularly in traffic policing, where direct public interaction and cash penalties create potential vulnerabilities. While digital challan systems have been introduced to improve transparency, gaps in implementation continue to be exploited.

Authorities have not yet disclosed whether further arrests or departmental suspensions will follow, but officials indicated that the matter is under active investigation. The role of other personnel mentioned in the complaint is also expected to be examined.

The incident is likely to prompt internal reviews within the Mira-Bhayander police force, with a focus on strengthening oversight mechanisms and ensuring accountability at all levels. It also underscores the importance of whistleblower protection within law enforcement agencies, especially when complaints emerge from within the system itself.
