April 6 | California: Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is set to lay off nearly 200 employees in Silicon Valley as part of its ongoing restructuring strategy aligned with its growing focus on artificial intelligence (AI). According to filings with California’s Employment Development Department, the company will eliminate approximately 198 roles across two locations 124 positions in Burlingame and 74 in Sunnyvale. The layoffs are scheduled to take effect in late May and are expected to be permanent.

This latest round of job cuts comes amid a broader restructuring exercise within Meta, which has already reduced hundreds of roles across various teams, including recruiting, sales, operations, and its Reality Labs division. The company has been actively streamlining operations while simultaneously ramping up investments in AI-driven technologies. The move reflects Meta’s strategic pivot toward artificial intelligence, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasizing AI as a transformative force in the way companies operate. Reports suggest that the company is significantly increasing its capital expenditure on AI infrastructure, including data centres and advanced computing systems, as it aims to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.

Despite the layoffs, Meta has indicated that it will continue hiring for key technical roles, particularly in AI and related fields. The company has also stated that efforts are being made to identify alternative opportunities for affected employees where possible. The development highlights a broader trend across the global technology sector, where companies are recalibrating their workforce to align with automation and AI-led efficiencies. While the shift promises long-term innovation, it also raises concerns about job displacement and changing workforce dynamics in the industry.
