April 7 | New Delhi : A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Cambridge has raised serious concerns over the environmental impact of rapidly expanding AI data centers. The research highlights a direct link between the establishment of these facilities and a noticeable rise in surrounding temperatures. According to the findings, regions hosting large-scale data centers are experiencing increased heat levels, primarily due to the massive energy consumption and heat generated by servers and cooling systems. The study estimates that more than 340 million people globally could face intensified heat conditions as a result of this trend.

The analysis, based on climate data collected over the past two decades, covered more than 6,000 data center locations worldwide. Researchers specifically isolated the impact of data centers from broader factors such as global warming, and still observed a consistent pattern of rising temperatures in nearby areas. In countries like Mexico and Spain, the surge in data center installations has coincided with measurable increases in local temperatures. Scientists noted that within a 10-kilometre radius of these facilities, temperatures rose by an average of 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit, with some extreme cases recording spikes of up to 16.4 degrees Fahrenheit.

Experts attribute this phenomenon largely to the heat expelled by cooling systems required to maintain optimal operating conditions for high-performance servers. As the demand for artificial intelligence and data processing continues to grow, the number of such centers is expected to rise sharply, potentially worsening the situation. The study underscores the urgent need for sustainable infrastructure and energy-efficient cooling technologies to mitigate the environmental impact of AI-driven growth. Without timely intervention, experts warn that data centers could become a significant contributor to localized climate stress in the coming years.
