Pune Police to Use AI for Faster FIR Registration, Pilot Begins at Baner Station

Pune Police has introduced an AI-based system to simplify FIR registration, aiming to reduce workload and improve efficiency through automated drafting and legal section suggestions.
April 7 | Pune : In a significant move towards modernising law enforcement, the Pune Police has decided to implement artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline the process of First Information Report (FIR) registration. The initiative is aimed at reducing the growing workload on police personnel while improving the speed and accuracy of complaint handling.
As part of the pilot project, a ‘voice-to-word’ AI software is being introduced at the Baner Police Station. The system will convert verbal complaints into written FIR drafts within minutes, significantly cutting down the time required for documentation. Developed by a private firm, the software is equipped with provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), enabling it to automatically suggest relevant legal sections based on the complainant’s input.
Officials said that while the AI tool will generate a draft FIR quickly, the final registration will only be completed after thorough verification by police officers to ensure accuracy and legal compliance. This step is crucial to maintain accountability and avoid any discrepancies in sensitive cases. The introduction of AI is expected to make the FIR registration process more transparent, efficient, and less time-consuming for both citizens and police staff. It will also help in reducing manual errors and standardising documentation across cases.
According to Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, the pilot implementation at Baner Police Station will be closely monitored before expanding the system to other police stations across the city.With this initiative, Pune Police aims to leverage advanced technology to enhance public service delivery and ensure quicker access to justice. If successful, the model could set a precedent for police departments across the country.
