PMC Accelerates Census 2027 Preparations, Completes First Phase of Trainer Sessions
Pune Municipal Corporation has completed initial training of field trainers for Census 2027, marking a key step in preparations for the nationwide exercise scheduled to begin with house listing in May 2026.
Pune | 10 April, 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation has intensified its preparations for Census 2027 by successfully completing the first phase of training sessions for field trainers, a crucial step ahead of the large-scale enumeration exercise.

The civic body has conducted structured training programmes for selected faculty members, including professors and assistant professors from various colleges across the city, who have been appointed as master trainers. These trainers will, in turn, guide enumerators and supervisors responsible for collecting household data across Pune.
Officials stated that the training included both classroom instruction and practical field sessions to ensure that participants gain hands-on experience in conducting surveys. The initiative aims to enhance accuracy and efficiency in data collection during the upcoming census process.
The Census 2027 exercise will be carried out in two phases. The first phase, scheduled to begin in mid-May 2026, will focus on house listing and housing data collection. Enumerators will visit households to gather details related to living conditions, amenities, and assets.

In addition, citizens will also have the option of self-enumeration for the first time. Through a dedicated online platform, residents can submit their information digitally before the physical verification process begins. This move is part of a broader push towards digitisation of the census, making the process more accessible and efficient.
Senior civic officials, including the Municipal Commissioner and Principal Census Officer, have overseen the training programme and emphasized the importance of public participation. Authorities have appealed to residents, housing societies, and institutions to cooperate with enumerators and provide accurate information during the survey.
The PMC is expected to conduct additional training sessions in phases to cover all personnel involved in the census exercise. Upcoming batches of trainers will undergo similar three-day programmes to ensure uniformity in execution across different wards of the city.
The census is considered a vital national exercise that provides critical data for policy planning, infrastructure development, and welfare schemes. Accurate data collection at the city level plays a key role in resource allocation and governance decisions.
With preparations gaining momentum, civic authorities are also focusing on awareness campaigns to encourage maximum participation. The success of Census 2027 will depend significantly on coordination between government agencies and active involvement from citizens.
As Pune gears up for one of the country’s most important statistical exercises, the completion of the first phase of training marks a significant milestone in ensuring a smooth and efficient enumeration process in the months ahead.
