Fire at Mumbai Airport Terminal 1 Triggers Panic, No Casualties Reported

A fire broke out at Mumbai’s Terminal 1, filling parts of the airport with smoke, but swift emergency response ensured no injuries and minimal disruption to flight operations.

Mumbai | 10 April, 2026: A fire incident at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport caused brief panic on Thursday evening after thick smoke engulfed sections of Terminal 1. However, authorities confirmed that no casualties were reported and the situation was brought under control swiftly.

According to officials, the fire broke out around 6:10 pm on April 9 in a ground-floor section of Terminal 1. Initial assessments suggest that a short circuit in the airport’s electrical infrastructure may have triggered the blaze.

Emergency response teams, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade, airport security, and local police, rushed to the spot immediately after the incident was reported. Firefighting operations were launched promptly, and the blaze was contained before it could spread to other parts of the terminal.

Eyewitness accounts and visuals circulating on social media showed dense smoke filling parts of the terminal , leading to temporary confusion among passengers. Some areas were briefly evacuated as a precautionary measure while emergency teams worked to secure the site.

Authorities stated that the fire was largely confined to electrical installations, including wiring, cables, and panels located in the airport’s power house section. Due to the limited spread, the incident was classified as a minor (Level I) fire.

Despite the alarming visuals, officials reassured that there was no impact on passenger safety. “The fire was quickly brought under control and no injuries have been reported,” an official statement said, adding that airport operations continued largely unaffected.

However, there were reports of temporary disruptions within the terminal, including delays in passenger movement and brief interruptions to certain systems. In some instances, electronic systems and access points were affected for a short duration before normalcy was restored.

Terminal 1 of Mumbai airport primarily handles domestic flight operations, making it a critical hub for passenger traffic. The quick response by emergency teams helped prevent a major incident at one of India’s busiest aviation facilities.

Officials have initiated a detailed investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the fire and to evaluate any potential lapses in safety mechanisms. Preliminary findings continue to point towards an electrical fault, though authorities are examining all possible angles.

The incident once again highlights the importance of robust safety protocols and rapid emergency response systems at major transport hubs.
