Dr. Mukund Abhyankar, former Cosmos Bank chairman, dies at 89 after a long illness. A stalwart of co-operative banking, he served over four decades and led the institution through significant growth.

April 17 | Pune: Dr. Mukund Abhyankar, former chairman of Cosmos Co-operative Bank, passed away on Thursday afternoon at the age of 89 due to age-related ailments, marking the end of a remarkable era in India’s co-operative banking sector. Dr. Abhyankar had an illustrious association with Cosmos Bank, serving on its board of directors for more than 46 years since 1978. Over the course of his long tenure, he was elected chairman nine times and played a pivotal role in steering the bank’s expansion, strengthening its operational framework, and enhancing customer trust.
Beyond his contributions to Cosmos Bank, Dr. Abhyankar also served as chairman of National Federation of Urban Co-operative Banks and Credit Societies in New Delhi, where he was instrumental in shaping policies and advocating for the growth of the co-operative banking movement across the country. A distinguished academic as well, he served as a former dean at Savitribai Phule Pune University and contributed to several committees of the Reserve Bank of India. His multifaceted career reflected a rare blend of financial expertise, academic excellence, and public service.

Known for his humility and commitment to social causes, Dr. Abhyankar was actively associated with multiple social organizations and remained dedicated to community development throughout his life. He is survived by his wife, son, daughter, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, and grandchildren. His mortal remains will be kept for public homage at Cosmos Bhavan on University Road in Pune on Friday between 11:00 AM and 11:30 AM, followed by the last rites at Vaikunth Crematorium at 12:00 noon.
