April 18, 2026 | New Delhi Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address the nation at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, a day after the Women’s Reservation Bill failed to pass in the Lok Sabha. The announcement has sparked widespread anticipation, with no official details yet on the agenda of the address. The development comes in the backdrop of a major parliamentary setback for the government, as the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, could not secure the required two-thirds majority. The bill, which aimed to introduce 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies, received 298 votes in favour and 230 against, falling short of the 352 votes needed for passage.

The proposed legislation also included provisions to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats from the current 543 to a maximum of 850. This expansion was intended to facilitate the implementation of women’s reservation ahead of the 2029 general elections. However, the proposal faced strong opposition, particularly over its linkage with the delimitation exercise based on the 2011 Census.

Following the bill’s failure, the government decided not to proceed with two related legislations the Delimitation Bill, 2026 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026. The decision was conveyed to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, indicating a temporary halt to the broader reform agenda tied to the amendment.

With political tensions running high and debates continuing over women’s representation, the Prime Minister’s address is expected to be closely watched. Observers believe the speech may outline the government’s next steps or attempt to build consensus on the issue, although no confirmation has been provided.

As the nation awaits clarity, the address comes at a crucial juncture, with the future of women’s reservation and parliamentary reforms remaining uncertain.
