MP Medha Kulkarni raises concerns over lack of Marathi stallholders, security gaps, and poor cleanliness at Pune Railway Station.

Pune, April 24, 2026: Concerns over local representation, passenger safety, and hygiene at Pune Railway Station have come under sharp scrutiny after BJP MP Medha Kulkarni alleged that Marathi-speaking vendors are underrepresented among stallholders at the city’s main railway hub.

Raising the issue with railway authorities, Kulkarni claimed that despite Pune being a cultural and linguistic centre of Maharashtra, a significant number of stalls at the station are operated by non-Marathi vendors. She argued that this imbalance sidelines local entrepreneurs and fails to reflect the region’s identity at a key public gateway used by thousands daily.

Alongside the representation issue, the MP also flagged serious concerns about security arrangements at the station. She pointed out lapses in surveillance, inadequate deployment of personnel in certain areas, and the need for stronger monitoring systems to ensure passenger safety, especially during peak hours.

Cleanliness at the station was another major point of concern. Kulkarni noted that several areas within the premises, including platforms and waiting zones, require better upkeep. She urged authorities to strengthen sanitation efforts and ensure regular maintenance to improve commuter experience.

Railway officials have taken note of the concerns and are expected to review vendor allocation policies, security mechanisms, and cleanliness standards. Sources indicate that inspections and corrective measures may be initiated in the coming days.

The issue has sparked a wider conversation around local representation in public infrastructure, especially in cities like Pune where cultural identity plays a significant role. At the same time, passenger safety and hygiene remain critical factors for one of the busiest railway stations in the region.

The concerns raised at Pune Railway Station highlight the need for a balanced approach – ensuring fair opportunities for local vendors while also addressing core issues like security and cleanliness. The response of railway authorities in the coming weeks will be closely watched.
