May 14, 2026 | New Delhi: In a major move aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector and fulfilling the promise of doubling farmers’ income, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved an increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all mandated Kharif crops for the 2026-27 marketing season. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who chaired the meeting, emphasized that the decision aligns with the 2018-19 Union Budget commitment to fix MSP at a level of at least 1.5 times the all-India weighted average cost of production.

The highest absolute increases have been recommended for oilseeds and pulses, reflecting the government’s push for self-reliance in these critical food categories. According to the official release, the new MSP for Tur (Arhar) has been set at ₹8,450 per quintal, while Moog stands at ₹8,780 and Urad at ₹8,200. For cereal farmers, the MSP for Paddy (Rice) has been raised to ₹2,441 per quintal, and Maize will now command a price of ₹2,410.

The government stated that this systematic hike is designed to provide farmers with a guaranteed price for their produce, shielding them from market volatility. For commercial crops, Cotton prices have been adjusted to ₹8,267, while Yellow Soybean has been increased to ₹5,708 per quintal. Nutri-cereals or “Shree Anna,” such as Ragi and Bajra, also saw substantial hikes, with Ragi reaching ₹5,205 per quintal to encourage sustainable farming practices.

Agricultural experts view this as a strategic effort to diversify crop patterns and reduce dependency on imports, particularly for oilseeds like Sesame (Til), which now holds an MSP of ₹10,346. By ensuring a profit margin of at least 50% over the cost of production, the center aims to make farming a more viable and profitable profession, directly impacting the livelihoods of millions of rural households across India.
