Senior IPS officer Ranjan Kumar Sharma has been appointed Special Inspector General of Police, Kolhapur Range, after serving as Pune Joint Commissioner overseeing several high-profile law and order operations.

May 17, 2026 | Mumbai The Maharashtra government has appointed senior IPS officer Ranjan Kumar Sharma as the new Special Inspector General (IG) of Police for the Kolhapur Range as part of its latest administrative reshuffle involving top police officials across the state. Sharma was previously serving as Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) in Pune City Police.

Known for his extensive experience in crime control, preventive policing, and handling sensitive law and order situations, Sharma played a significant role in managing several critical policing operations during his tenure in Pune. He worked closely with Amitesh Kumar, Commissioner of Pune Police, on major security and operational matters.

Officials credited Sharma for successfully supervising large-scale security arrangements during the annual Koregaon Bhima commemoration events, considered among Maharashtra’s most sensitive law and order deployments. His focus on intelligence coordination, crowd management, and preventive measures was widely acknowledged within the police department.

Sharma also monitored field operations and coordinated investigations in several sensitive criminal cases that drew statewide attention, including the Swargate bus rape case and the Bopdev Ghat rape case. His responsibilities included reviewing investigation progress, supervising police teams, and coordinating search operations for accused individuals.

Apart from crime investigations, Sharma was involved in tackling organised crime-related tensions in Pune and nearby regions. Police officials stated that he strengthened coordination between local police stations, crime branch units, and intelligence teams during operations connected to gangster activities and public order concerns.

He was additionally associated with “Mission Parivartan,” a rehabilitation initiative designed for juveniles in conflict with the law. The programme focused on counselling, behavioural reform, and social reintegration through coordinated intervention efforts.

Officials believe Sharma’s experience in urban policing and community-oriented initiatives will strengthen policing efficiency and law enforcement coordination across the Kolhapur Range.
