A severe heatwave is holding India in its grip with Brahmapuri recording a scorching 47.1 degrees Celsius, while the southwest monsoon progresses steadily through Sri Lanka toward Kerala.

Pune | May 22, 2026: While the southwest monsoon advances rapidly toward the Indian mainland, a severe heatwave continues to batter the country. On Thursday, Banda in Uttar Pradesh registered the nation’s highest temperature at a blistering 48 degrees Celsius, closely followed by Brahmapuri in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, which recorded a searing 47.1 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning stating that these intense heatwave conditions are projected to persist across various regions until May 27.

Simultaneously, the monsoon is making steady progress over the Arabian Sea. Weather officials confirmed that the monsoon current has been stationed in Sri Lanka for the past three days. It is anticipated to make landfall over Kerala by May 26, offering much-needed relief from the prevailing extreme summer conditions. Until then, standard temperatures across the central and northern plains are expected to remain exceptionally high.

The regional temperature data from Thursday highlights the severity of the atmospheric conditions across Maharashtra. Vidarbha bore the brunt of the heat, with Nagpur recording 46.6 degrees Celsius, Wardha and Amravati both hitting 46.4 degrees Celsius, and Chandrapur reaching 46.2 degrees Celsius. Other notably high temperatures included Akola and Yavatmal at 45.2 degrees Celsius, Gondia at 44.9 degrees Celsius, and Parbhani at 43 degrees Celsius.

In contrast, Western Maharashtra and the coastal areas experienced relatively moderate conditions. Pune recorded 38.2 degrees Celsius, Lohegaon hit 40 degrees Celsius, and Mumbai stayed at 34.4 degrees Celsius. The hill station of Mahabaleshwar remained the coolest retreat in the state at 29.6 degrees Celsius. Meteorological experts advise citizens to take necessary precautions against heat exhaustion over the next five days as the state awaits the arrival of the seasonal rains.
