An escalating water shortage driven by intense May heat has left over 1.25 lakh residents across Pune district entirely dependent on water tankers, as local water bodies and groundwater levels deplete rapidly.

Pune | May 22, 2026: The rural parts of Pune district are facing a severe water crisis as soaring summer temperatures have dried up traditional water sources, forcing the district administration to deploy 58 water tankers across affected villages. According to the latest data released by the district management authorities, the situation is deteriorating daily, leaving more than 1.25 lakh citizens relying completely on external water distribution to meet their basic daily needs.

The crisis is most acute in Ambegaon taluka, which currently requires the highest deployment of 28 operational water tankers. Local administration reports indicate that a majority of public wells, private borewells, and regional small-scale water supply schemes in the area have run completely dry. Following Ambegaon, the talukas of Junnar and Khed are also experiencing severe distress, with residents forced to travel long distances daily to secure potable water.

While the southwest monsoon is projected to reach the state within a few weeks, local irrigation departments note that current water storage levels in major dams and regional reservoirs remain critically low. This lack of buffer storage has raised fears that the water scarcity could intensify further if pre-monsoon showers are delayed, compounding the logistical pressure on the state’s ongoing relief operations.

Public policy experts and rural community leaders have renewed calls for a permanent architectural solution to the state’s recurring summer water deficits. Critics point out that despite annual financial allocations, the absence of robust decentralised soil conservation, mandatory rainwater harvesting frameworks, and sustainable long-term water budget planning continues to leave vulnerable agrarian pockets exposed to acute shortages every summer.
