Toshifumi Suzuki, the businessman credited with revolutionising Japan’s convenience store industry and building the global success of Seven & i Holdings and 7-Eleven, has died at the age of 93. The company confirmed that the former chairman passed away on May 18 due to heart failure.

Suzuki is widely regarded as the architect of Japan’s modern convenience retail system. Born in Nagano Prefecture in 1932, he joined retailer Ito-Yokado in the 1960s before introducing the American-style convenience store concept to Japan in the early 1970s. Despite skepticism from industry experts at the time, Suzuki secured licensing rights from the US-based Southland Corporation and launched the first Seven-Eleven store in Tokyo in 1974.

Under his leadership, Seven-Eleven Japan expanded rapidly by focusing on customer convenience, data-driven inventory systems, ready-to-eat meals, and efficient supply chains. His retail strategies transformed convenience stores from simple grocery outlets into essential service hubs offering ATMs, bill payments, parcel deliveries, and ticketing services. Analysts say his innovations reshaped shopping habits across Japan and later influenced global retail operations.

Suzuki also played a major role in rescuing Southland Corporation after its financial troubles in the early 1990s, helping Japanese management gain control of the iconic 7-Eleven brand. In 2005, he established Seven & i Holdings and expanded the business into one of the world’s largest retail conglomerates with tens of thousands of stores worldwide.

Although he stepped down in 2016 following internal management disputes, Suzuki remained an influential figure in Japanese business circles. Today, his legacy continues through a retail model that changed convenience shopping around the world.
