Following firm assurances from the municipal administration regarding strict action against illegal garbage collection syndicates exploiting local businesses, the Congress party has temporarily suspended its planned protest in Viman Nagar
Pune | May 26, 2026 : A highly organized illegal waste management syndicate operating throughout the Viman Nagar area is finally facing strict administrative scrutiny. The Nagar Road-Wadgaon Sheri ward office has officially committed to taking decisive punitive action against this local garbage mafia, prompting the Congress party to temporarily call off a massive agitation scheduled for this week.
According to local political leaders, this unauthorized syndicate has been systematically extorting hotel owners and commercial establishments. Private waste collectors actively charge these entities between ₹10,000 to ₹20,000 monthly for private disposal services. Shockingly, the collected refuse is then illegally unloaded at the municipal corporation’s official waste segregation facilities, essentially utilizing public infrastructure for unchecked private profit.
Public outrage peaked when it was revealed that the ward’s health department had intercepted a private transport vehicle linked to this racket nearly two months ago. However, no subsequent legal action was initiated. This glaring inaction led to widespread allegations that corrupt civic officials were actively shielding the syndicate, allowing the financial exploitation of businesses to continue unabated.
To protest this blatant administrative complicity, the Congress party organized a strong demonstration outside the ward office. Right before the protest began, Assistant Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Pol held an urgent meeting with a political delegation, assuring them of an immediate and stringent crackdown on the illegal operators.
Following these official assurances, local Congress leader Karim Shaikh announced the temporary suspension of the protest. Accompanied by party workers Pramod Devkar and Prabha Karpe, Shaikh emphasized that the delegation has formally petitioned the municipal commissioner, demanding a high-level inquiry into the suspicious conduct of the health officials who previously let the offenders walk free.
