Maharashtra witnesses an unprecedented spike in fuel consumption, prompting Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to issue a stern warning of severe joint department action against black marketeers creating artificial scarcity

May 27, 2026 | Mumbai: Maharashtra is experiencing an unusually high surge in demand for petrol and diesel. While authorities are consistently ensuring that this increased demand is met with adequate supply, concerns are rapidly mounting over the deliberate creation of an artificial scarcity-like situation. Taking cognizance, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis issued a stern warning on Tuesday against those attempting to exploit the situation.

Addressing the media at the Mantralaya following a state cabinet meeting, Fadnavis emphasized that black marketeers taking undue advantage of the essential needs of farmers and the general public will face severe consequences. He announced that the Civil Supplies and Home Departments will initiate strict, joint operations to crack down on individuals found guilty of hoarding fuel. During the briefing, where Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was also present, the Chief Minister briefly touched upon the pressing issue of fluctuating onion prices.

Providing detailed statistical insights into the fuel supply scenario, the Chief Minister revealed that the state has recorded a 23 percent increase in the demand for petrol. More alarmingly, the demand for diesel has skyrocketed by a staggering 52 percent compared to average levels. Although the administration is actively supplying the required volumes, the phenomenal growth in specific districts has raised massive red flags.

Fadnavis pointed out that consumption patterns in certain pockets are suspicious. Fuel sales in the Akola district have witnessed an unbelievable jump of 154 percent. Similarly, districts including Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Beed, Bhandara, Buldhana, Gondia, and Hingoli have reported consumption surges exceeding 70 percent. The administration suspects coordinated hoarding is the root cause behind these inflated statistics, prompting the imminent crackdown.
