The Central Election Commission has exempted Maharashtra’s farmer loan waiver scheme from the Model Code of Conduct, enabling the state government to disburse crucial agricultural relief funds before June 30

May 27, 2026 | Mumbai: The path for implementing Maharashtra’s ambitious farmer loan waiver scheme has been officially cleared. The Central Election Commission (CEC) has granted a special exemption from the Model Code of Conduct, ensuring the state government can roll out the financial relief package before the June 30 deadline.

The scheme’s implementation faced uncertainty due to the active Model Code of Conduct enforced for the upcoming Legislative Council elections, where voting for 17 seats is scheduled for June 18. Concerns arose that the regulatory restrictions would stall the disbursement of funds. However, the Election Commission’s green signal has eliminated these administrative roadblocks, allowing Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to deliver on his major budget promise.

Under this comprehensive relief package, the state government has announced a complete loan waiver of up to ₹2 lakh for distressed farmers with outstanding bank debts. Additionally, to reward financial discipline, the administration will deposit an incentive bonus of ₹50,000 directly into the bank accounts of farmers who have been regularly repaying their agricultural loans.

Maharashtra’s agrarian community has faced severe economic hardships recently, battered by a relentless cycle of droughts, unseasonal rainfall, and flash floods. Coupled with rising production costs, the financial stability of ordinary farmers had severely collapsed. This timely intervention will provide a massive financial cushion just as the crucial Kharif sowing season commences.

Administrative sources confirmed that the verification process for all eligible beneficiaries has entered its final stage. The allocated funds and incentive bonuses will be transferred directly into verified bank accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) before June 30. This prompt financial influx will drastically alleviate agrarian distress, empowering farmers to invest safely in seasonal agricultural inputs.
