Menlo Park, California

Meta has appointed CRED founder Kunal Shah as the new global chief of WhatsApp, ushering in a major leadership change at one of the world’s most widely used messaging platforms. The move comes as long-serving WhatsApp head Will Cathcart transitions to a different role within the company after nearly seven years in charge.

Shah, who founded fintech platform CRED in 2018, is set to leave his operational responsibilities at the Bengaluru-based company to take up the new assignment. The appointment coincides with Meta’s decision to make a significant investment in CRED, strengthening ties between the social media giant and the Indian fintech ecosystem.

Meta executives have highlighted Shah’s entrepreneurial experience and product-building approach as key factors behind the decision. The company believes his background in consumer technology and digital payments could help WhatsApp expand beyond messaging into areas such as commerce, payments and business services.

Under Cathcart’s leadership, WhatsApp crossed three billion users globally and introduced several new features, including Communities, Channels and artificial intelligence integrations. His departure marks the end of a transformative period for the platform, while Shah’s arrival signals a renewed focus on monetisation and future growth opportunities.

CRED, meanwhile, will undergo a leadership transition, with senior executive Miten Sampat expected to oversee operations on an interim basis. Industry observers view the development as another example of Indian entrepreneurs taking on prominent positions in global technology companies.

With India remaining WhatsApp’s largest market, Shah’s appointment is expected to further strengthen the platform’s focus on digital payments, business messaging and AI-powered services in the years ahead.
