Residents of Pune have been urged to use water responsibly as the water stock in the Khadakwasla dam system, the city’s primary source of drinking water, remains considerably lower than it was during the same period last year. Officials have appealed for judicious water consumption to ensure an adequate supply in the coming months despite the ongoing monsoon.
According to the latest official data, the four reservoirs of the Khadakwasla dam chain currently hold 17.26 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water, representing nearly 60% of the system’s total storage capacity. While the recent rainfall has helped improve reservoir levels, the overall storage remains 5.61 TMC lower than the 22.87 TMC (79%) recorded on the corresponding day last year.
The Khadakwasla reservoir system, comprising Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar dams, serves as the primary source of drinking water for Pune city and several adjoining areas. The lower water availability compared to last year has prompted authorities to closely monitor reservoir levels and plan water distribution carefully.
Officials said that prudent water management will play a crucial role in maintaining an uninterrupted drinking water supply until reservoir levels improve further. They emphasized that while there is no immediate cause for panic, citizens should avoid unnecessary wastage and adopt water conservation practices in their daily routine.
Experts have also pointed out that rainfall patterns can vary significantly from year to year, making efficient reservoir management essential for ensuring water security. Civic authorities are expected to continue monitoring inflows into the dams throughout the monsoon season and make operational decisions based on rainfall forecasts and storage levels.
With Pune’s growing population and increasing water demand, authorities have reiterated that responsible water usage by residents will remain a key factor in maintaining a stable drinking water supply, particularly if rainfall remains uneven in the weeks ahead.
