Pune October Heat Intensifies as Temperatures Rise After Monsoon Retreat

Pune’s October heat is intensifying as temperatures rise above normal following the monsoon retreat. IMD forecasts hot and dry conditions in the coming days.

Pune: October has brought a noticeable rise in daytime temperatures across Pune, with dry weather and the retreat of the southwest monsoon contributing to increasingly hot afternoons.

Shivajinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 34.4°C on October 5, around 3.1°C above normal, while the minimum temperature was 19.7°C. The previous day, the city recorded 34.8°C, highlighting the sharp contrast between warm afternoons and relatively cooler nights.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast indicates that the warm conditions are likely to continue. Pune-Shivajinagar is expected to see maximum temperatures of around 35–36°C during the first part of the week, with mainly clear skies and no major weather warning.

The heat is not confined to central Pune. Recent observations showed elevated temperatures across several parts of the city, including Lohegaon, Chinchwad and other locations. Earlier readings recorded 35°C at Lohegaon and 34.5°C at Chinchwad, while Magarpatta and NDA also crossed 33°C.

The changing weather pattern is linked to the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon. The monsoon began withdrawing from Maharashtra on October 3, with the withdrawal line reaching Pune. This marked Pune’s earliest monsoon retreat since 2014, according to meteorological reports.

With rainfall activity reducing and cloud cover decreasing, more sunlight is reaching the surface during the day. IMD scientists have indicated that these conditions can push temperatures higher, with warmer-than-normal weather expected to persist across parts of Maharashtra.

For Pune residents, the weather pattern means hot and dry afternoons followed by comparatively cooler mornings and nights. The widening day-night temperature difference may make the afternoon heat feel particularly uncomfortable.

Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct afternoon sunlight and take extra care while undertaking outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
