PMC Demolishes 21,000-Sq-Ft Illegal Structure on Playground-Reserved Plot in Kharadi
PMC demolishes a 21,000-sq-ft unauthorised structure on a playground-reserved plot in Kharadi after repeated construction despite civic action.
Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has demolished an unauthorised structure measuring approximately 21,000 square feet that had been constructed on a plot reserved for a playground in Kharadi.
The action was taken by the PMC Building Department after the construction allegedly continued despite repeated notices and earlier attempts by civic officials to stop the work.
Construction on playground-reserved land
The property is located at Survey No. 63 in Kharadi, which is designated as a playground-reserved plot. According to civic officials, construction had begun on the land without obtaining the necessary permissions.
Following a complaint, the PMC had initially taken action when the construction was still at the plinth stage. Despite the action, construction reportedly resumed at the site.
The civic authorities subsequently intervened on two more occasions and stopped the work. However, the construction was allegedly restarted again, eventually prompting the PMC to demolish the entire structure.
Alleged commercial and residential development
According to information emerging from the civic action, commercial shops and residential flats were allegedly being developed at the site.
The development has raised concerns among citizens, particularly over the possibility that buyers could face financial losses if properties were being sold despite the plot’s reserved status and the absence of required permissions.
Calls for criminal action
The repeated construction despite previous civic action has also raised questions over enforcement and accountability.
Pravin Shende said that action had already been taken when the construction was at the plinth level and that further attempts were made to stop the work. He called for criminal cases to be registered against those who repeatedly violate civic regulations.
Questions over enforcement remain
The demolition has brought renewed attention to the protection of land reserved for public amenities such as playgrounds.
Citizens are now awaiting clarity on whether the PMC will initiate further legal or criminal proceedings against those responsible for the unauthorised construction.
The action also highlights the need for stricter monitoring of reserved plots and timely intervention before unauthorised structures reach an advanced stage.
