Pune MLC Elections: Paid Holiday for Eligible Government Staff, Four Hours Off for Private Employees

Eligible government employees get a paid holiday, while private staff receive four hours off to vote in Pune Graduates’ and Teachers’ elections on October 23.

Pune: Eligible government employees registered as voters in the Pune Division Graduates’ and Teachers’ constituencies will receive a paid holiday on Friday, October 23, 2026, to cast their votes in the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections. Private-sector employees who are registered voters in these constituencies will receive a special four-hour concession to exercise their voting rights.

The revised arrangement was announced by Divisional Commissioner and Returning Officer Sheetal Teli-Ugale following an Election Commission circular issued on October 16. The concession for private employees has been increased from the previously announced two hours to four hours.

Paid Holiday for Eligible Government Employees

Under Section 135B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, eligible government employees registered in the relevant electoral constituencies will receive a paid holiday on polling day. The leave will be provided in addition to their regular casual leave entitlement.

The benefit applies only to employees whose names appear on the electoral rolls of the concerned Graduates’ or Teachers’ constituencies. Government office heads have been instructed to ensure that essential administrative work and public services continue without disruption.

Private Employees to Get Four Hours Off

Private-sector employees who are eligible voters will receive four hours off to visit their designated polling stations. The revised concession is intended to help employees participate in the elections without undue work-related restrictions.

Unlike the provision for eligible government employees, the arrangement does not grant private-sector staff a full-day paid holiday. Employers are expected to provide the prescribed concession to eligible voters.

Pune Graduates’ and Teachers’ Election Schedule

Polling for the Pune Division Graduates’ and Teachers’ constituencies will take place on Friday, October 23, from 8 am to 4 pm. Counting of votes is scheduled for October 27, 2026.

The Graduates’ constituency covers Pune, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur and Solapur districts. The Teachers’ constituency covers the designated areas within the Pune division.

Eligible voters are encouraged to check their names on the relevant electoral rolls and confirm their polling station before election day.

The leave arrangements are intended to facilitate voter participation while allowing essential public services and private-sector operations to continue.
