Yerawada: 69-Year-Old Man Dies After Falling Into 15-Foot Drainage Pit at PMC Worksite

A 69-year-old man died after falling into a drainage pit at a PMC worksite in Yerawada, Pune, prompting concerns over construction safety.

Pune: A 69-year-old man died after falling into a deep drainage pit dug for civic work near Chitra Chowk in Yerawada, Pune, on October 17. The incident has raised concerns over pedestrian safety and the precautions taken at construction sites.

The deceased, identified as Pradeep Laxman Pardeshi, was reportedly walking towards the local vegetable market when an autorickshaw brushed against him, causing him to lose his balance and fall into the excavation. The pit was estimated to be around 10 to 15 feet deep.

According to police, CCTV footage from the area was examined as part of the investigation. Pardeshi sustained serious injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment, where he later died.

Residents Raise Concerns Over Barricades

The incident has sparked concerns among local residents about safety arrangements at the drainage worksite. Residents alleged that the excavation lacked sufficiently strong barricades, adequate warning signs and proper arrangements to guide pedestrians and regulate traffic.

They also claimed that the ongoing work had narrowed the road, leaving limited space for vehicles travelling in opposite directions. Questions have been raised about whether sufficient precautions were taken to protect people passing through the area.

Demand for Action Against Contractor

Local representatives and residents have called for accountability from those responsible for the work. Corporator Avinash Salve has questioned the safety measures at the site and demanded strict action against the contractor, including blacklisting and criminal proceedings if negligence is established.

The demands come amid concerns about the risks posed by open excavations on busy roads and in residential neighbourhoods.

Police Investigation Underway

Police from Laxmi Nagar Police Station have been examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the CCTV footage and the role of the autorickshaw. Further action will depend on the findings of the investigation and the available evidence.

The tragedy has renewed calls for stronger barricades, clear warning signs, adequate lighting and safe pedestrian passages at road and drainage construction sites across Pune.

The Pune Municipal Corporation and the agencies responsible for civic works face renewed scrutiny over the implementation of safety measures designed to prevent such incidents.
