Schaeffler India CEO Taken Into Police Custody Over Fatal Factory Accident; Will Labour Authorities Also Examine Compliance?

Schaeffler India CEO Detained in Pune Factory Accident Probe
Schaeffler India CEO Harsha Gopal Kadam was detained in connection with the Talegaon factory accident. Questions remain over reported safety findings and labour-law compliance.
Pune, October 21, 2026: In a significant development in the investigation into a fatal industrial accident, Schaeffler India Managing Director and CEO Harsha Gopal Kadam was taken into police custody in connection with a carbon dioxide (CO₂) gas leak at the company’s Talegaon MIDC facility that claimed two workers’ lives and injured three others.
The police action brings the company’s top executive within the scope of the investigation into the June 9, 2026, accident. Kadam was detained on the evening of October 19, according to the company’s regulatory disclosure dated October 20. The investigation concerns his role as the factory’s statutory occupier.
The action stands out because the investigation has reached the managing director of a major industrial company in a case involving alleged workplace-safety lapses and the deaths of contract workers. However, describing it as the first such case would require a broader comparison with similar investigations.

Two workers killed during CO₂ cylinder replacement
The accident occurred during the replacement of cylinders associated with the factory’s fire-suppression system. A sudden discharge of CO₂ reportedly killed two workers employed by a service provider and injured three others.
Police subsequently registered an offence against individuals associated with the company and service providers. The investigation has examined alleged deficiencies involving ventilation, emergency exits, trained personnel, protective equipment and rescue arrangements. These allegations remain subject to investigation and judicial determination.
DISH inquiry raises questions over statutory approvals
The Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health (DISH), Pune, reportedly conducted an inquiry and submitted a report identifying concerns over the requisite permission for the pit where the accident occurred, along with installation approvals, ventilation and safety requirements.
According to information concerning the inquiry, responsibility for obtaining the relevant permission was attributed to Kadam in his capacity as the factory occupier. The reported findings raise questions about whether the necessary approvals and safeguards were in place before the installation was operated and workers undertook maintenance activities.
The full DISH report should be obtained to establish its precise findings and recommendations. The reported findings do not, by themselves, establish criminal guilt.
CEO referred to Sassoon Hospital
According to details of the subsequent proceedings, Kadam was detained from Baner on October 19 and taken to the Sub-District Hospital at Kane Phata for a medical examination. After his blood pressure was reportedly found to be high, he was referred to YCM Hospital and subsequently to Sassoon General Hospital for further treatment.
A report was submitted to the Judicial Magistrate First Class court at Wadgaon. According to the information available, the court directed that he remain in hospital until his treatment was completed and be produced before it after discharge. The specific court order should be independently verified.
Will Labour Authorities also examine current compliance?
While the DISH inquiry reportedly identified safety and approval-related concerns, questions remain over whether the Maharashtra Labour Department will independently examine the company’s current labour-law compliance status.
Will the Labour Commissioner’s office review applicable employment and contract-labour requirements, statutory benefits, worker records and contractor compliance? Will officials verify whether any deficiencies identified by the competent authorities have been rectified and whether outstanding notices or corrective directions remain pending?
A compliance review by the relevant labour authorities would help establish whether the issues extend beyond the immediate circumstances of the accident. NewsDotz will seek an official response from the Labour Department regarding its inspection history, findings and action taken or proposed.
Company says operations continue normally
In its regulatory filing, Schaeffler India said the company, its officers and employees had cooperated with the investigation and would continue to do so. It also stated that senior management remained responsible for day-to-day operations and that business activities continued in the ordinary course.
The investigation will need to establish the circumstances that led to the gas discharge, whether statutory requirements were breached and the respective responsibilities of the factory occupier, plant management and service providers.
