African Swine Fever confirmed in Nashik. Infected and surveillance zones declared, movement curbs imposed on pigs to contain the outbreak.

Pune | November 24, 2025: A confirmed case of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Nashik has prompted authorities to activate emergency animal-health protocols in the district. The virus was detected after samples from pigs near the Pathardi dumping ground tested positive, leading officials to immediately declare a 1-kilometre infected zone and a 10-kilometre surveillance zone around the area.

Veterinary teams, disaster management units, and local administrative staff have begun intensive monitoring, disinfection drives, and door-to-door inspections to check for any additional infected pigs. While no humans are at risk — since ASF does not spread to people — the outbreak poses a serious threat to the pig-rearing community due to its high fatality rate among pigs. Authorities have banned the movement, sale, and transport of pigs and pork products within the containment zones, and farmers have been urged to report any sudden pig deaths or unusual symptoms immediately. Strict biosecurity checks, controlled access to farms, safe disposal of carcasses, and continuous surveillance are underway as officials race to prevent the virus from spreading further. The administration has asked local residents, pig owners, and panchayats to cooperate fully, stressing that the next few weeks will be crucial in containing the outbreak and safeguarding the region’s livestock economy.
