The Maharashtra government has introduced an AI-based ‘Kumbhdoot’ app to manage massive crowds, provide real-time updates and enhance safety for millions of devotees attending Nashik Kumbh Mela 2027.
Nashik | March 23, 2026: In a major technological push ahead of the upcoming Kumbh Mela, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has launched an artificial intelligence-powered mobile application named ‘Kumbhdoot’ to improve crowd management and ensure devotee safety.

The initiative has been introduced in preparation for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela scheduled to be held in Nashik and Trimbakeshwar in 2027, which is expected to witness the arrival of millions of pilgrims from across India and abroad.
Officials said the ‘Kumbhdoot’ app is designed to leverage advanced AI technology to monitor real-time crowd movement, predict congestion points and assist authorities in taking timely action. The system will enable better coordination between police, emergency services and administrative agencies during peak gathering days.
The application was unveiled during the India AI Impact Summit 2026, where the state government showcased multiple AI-driven governance initiatives. The ‘Kumbhdoot’ platform is part of a broader strategy to integrate technology into large-scale public event management.

One of the key features of the app is its ability to provide real-time information to devotees, including crowd density updates, route guidance and emergency alerts. Authorities believe this will significantly reduce confusion and improve overall crowd flow during the event.
The platform is also expected to support a personalised assistance model, where each registered pilgrim could be aided by a digital AI assistant. This system will be integrated with India’s digital infrastructure, enabling seamless access to services such as healthcare, transport and local facilities.
Officials highlighted that the app will be accessible in more than 20 Indian languages, ensuring ease of use for devotees from diverse linguistic backgrounds. Additionally, voice-based features are being developed to assist elderly users and those with limited digital literacy.
The government has also indicated that the technology will play a crucial role in emergency response management. In case of overcrowding or any untoward incident, authorities will be able to respond quickly using data generated by the app, thereby enhancing overall safety.
Apart from digital initiatives, large-scale infrastructure development is underway in Nashik and surrounding areas to accommodate the expected surge in visitors. Roads, public amenities and transport systems are being upgraded to ensure smooth movement and better facilities during the mega religious event.
Experts believe that the use of AI in managing events of such scale could set a new benchmark for public administration in India. The integration of real-time data analytics with on-ground operations is expected to significantly improve efficiency and reduce risks associated with overcrowding.

With the Kumbh Mela known for attracting massive gatherings, the introduction of the ‘Kumbhdoot’ app reflects the government’s effort to combine tradition with technology, ensuring a safer and more organised experience for devotees.
