Air-Conditioned Smart Public Toilet Inaugurated Near Phoenix Mall, Viman Nagar (Pune)
Pune opens a 444 sq ft air-conditioned smart public toilet near Phoenix Mall, Viman Nagar, with facilities for all genders, disabled users and babies.
Pune | November 5, 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has officially inaugurated a high-end air-conditioned smart public toilet near the Phoenix Marketcity Pune in the Viman Nagar area of Pune. The state-of-the-art facility spans about 444 square feet and was designed to offer much-enhanced convenience and hygiene for city residents, shoppers and visitors alike.
Inside the facility, 70 % of the space has been dedicated to toilet usage, while the remaining 30 % is reserved for a café-style waiting and refreshment zone. The amenities include: five toilets and urinals for men; five toilets for women plus a dedicated baby-feeding and changing room; separate units for transgender persons; and a fully accessible toilet for differently-abled users. The project cost is approximately ₹33 lakh.
PMC officials say the smart toilet is part of a broader plan to improve public sanitation infrastructure in high-footfall zones of the city. Features such as air-conditioning, robust cleaning schedules, digital payment options and segregated sections aim to raise the standard of public-restroom amenities.
However, citizen activists and resident-forums have raised objections, arguing that while the facility is impressive, the funds might have been better spent on multiple conventional public toilets, particularly in underserved zones such as the airport area and Viman Nagar itself. They question whether prioritising a “premium” facility over addressing broader accessibility gaps is the correct approach.
The launch of this air-conditioned smart public toilet near Phoenix Mall marks a visible step forward in Pune’s public sanitation drive. If well-maintained and widely used, it could set a new benchmark for urban convenience. However, ensuring accessibility across the city—including less glamorous but equally essential facilities—remains the larger challenge.
